December Spam Stastics

~ Posted December 27, 2008 @ 0730 by Mike

Below are the spam statistics for December which are much lower than what we had anticipated. The table below represents the top 20 domains we host email for sorted by percent of messages blocked. While the spam is still bad these numbers are much better than October.

Email Attack

~ Posted December 18, 2008 @ 0530 by Mike

If you have ever wondered what a network attack looks like below is a very good example.
This log from one of the NewNet 66 email servers shows an IP address trying to gain access to the mail server using POP 3. The attack is noted by the number of attempts tried within a very short period of time. In this case 212.241.221.72 tried to gain access 1,610 times within one minute which is considered a "Denial of Service Attack." The attacker's IP address belongs to a web hosting company located in England. We have blacklisted the entire IP block that this company owns and sent the logs to their abuse department.

Exploit Paths

~ Posted December 13, 2008 @ 0700 by Mike

Exploits can arrive at your school district in many ways and often do not source from the Internet. The diagram below depicts the paths that an exploit might take to gain access to your network.

The largest risk today seems to be 'Thumb Drives' which can be purchased almost anywhere.
